Practical guidance for building, launching, and growing Shopify apps.
AI coding tools have lowered the effort required to prototype software, explore unfamiliar code, and implement routine functionality. A solo developer can often move from an idea to a working demonstration faster than before. But easier development does not automatically make a business easier to build.
When implementation becomes cheaper, it is tempting to treat speed as the main competitive advantage. Yet merchants do not pay simply because an app was difficult to code. They pay when it solves a meaningful problem, fits their workflow, works reliably, and provides value worth the price.
AI can help accelerate research, generate prototypes, explain APIs, create test cases, and handle repetitive development tasks. These benefits are most useful when the developer already understands the problem and can evaluate the output. Generated code still requires review, testing, security checks, and careful handling of customer data.
The commercial work remains. You must identify a suitable market, understand merchant needs, communicate a clear value proposition, reach potential users, establish pricing, and retain customers. AI can assist with parts of these tasks, but it cannot guarantee that the underlying assumptions are correct or that a distribution channel will work.
There is also a risk of building too much too quickly. When adding a feature takes less time, it becomes easier to expand scope without checking whether the feature matters. The result can be a complicated product that is difficult to explain and still lacks a strong reason for merchants to choose it.
A more effective approach is to use AI to reduce the cost of learning. Build a focused prototype, test the central workflow, collect feedback, and improve only when evidence supports the change. Keep human oversight over important technical, privacy, and business decisions.
The advantage does not belong automatically to the developer who produces the most code. It belongs to the founder who combines faster execution with better judgment about which problem deserves to be solved and how to reach the people who need it.
