Stop Copying Competitors: How to Find Gaps in the Shopify App Market

Competitor research is useful when it helps you understand a market. It becomes less useful when the goal is simply to reproduce another app's feature list. A copy may be technically competent but still lack a compelling reason for merchants to switch or install an additional tool.

Start by defining a specific merchant segment. Stores at different stages can have very different needs. A small merchant may prioritize simplicity and price, while a larger operation may care more about workflow control, reliability, integrations, and reporting. A market gap is easier to identify when you know exactly whose problem you are investigating.

Study competitor reviews and look for repeated themes. Pay attention to confusing setup, missing integrations, slow support, unexpected limitations, poor reporting, and features that merchants repeatedly request. A single review can be an outlier; recurring patterns are more useful evidence.

Investigate the complete user journey, not just the feature list. Evaluate products where appropriate, examine their onboarding, test their main workflows, and understand where the experience becomes difficult. A simpler workflow can be a meaningful differentiator even when the underlying functionality already exists elsewhere.

Estimate whether the opportunity is commercially meaningful. How many merchants might experience this problem? How urgent is it? Are they already paying for alternatives or spending employee time on workarounds? Can you reach them through the App Store, partnerships, communities, or direct outreach? A technical gap is not automatically a business opportunity.

Test your proposed improvement with potential users. A clear mockup, focused landing page, or small prototype may reveal more than weeks of development. Ask for specific feedback about the workflow, current alternatives, and the consequences of leaving the problem unsolved.

The objective is not to find a market without competitors. It is to find a group of merchants whose important needs are not being served well, then deliver a better solution in a way they can discover and understand.
